How to access copies of medical imaging

You can now view, store and instantly share your medical imaging records through a new partnership with PocketHealth (Please note PocketHealth charges a fee for this service).

Follow these steps to access copies of your medical imaging:

  1. Go to pockethealth.com/CHEO.
  2. Click on ‘request your record’
Note: PocketHealth requires you to provide your CHEO Medical Record Number (MRN#). This number can be found on forms/documents you received while you were at CHEO and is a 9-digit number that starts with 0. If don’t know your MRN#, please call our Digital Library (613-737-7600 ext. 2307) to get it. As a way to confirm who you are, we will ask you to provide two identifying pieces of information over the phone. This could include the patient's full name, sex, date of birth or OHIP Card #.
  3. Once your records are ready to view, you’ll receive an email from PocketHealth with a secure link.
  • For recent images: access will be available 2 days after your images have been completed.
  • For recent reports: access will be available 10 days after your report has been finalized by a radiologist.

How can I access my patients’ imaging records?

Instead of a CD, you’ll receive an access page via email, fax or hard copy from a CHEO provider or patient, with instructions on how to access their imaging.

  • Go to pockethealth.com/view
  • Enter the patient’s date of birth and security code found on the Access Page.
  • Securely view your patient’s imaging in full diagnostic quality on PocketHealth’s Health Canada/FDA-compliant cloud viewer (eUnity TM), or download these files without compression for offline use or to import them into your RIS/PACS.
  • To request an imaging record, please fax us at 613-738-4872. Please clearly indicate your preferred fax number for this request.

Radiation Safety at CHEO

At CHEO, we prioritize your child’s safety in every aspect of their care — including medical imaging. Based on the latest evidence and advancements in radiology, we’ve removed the use of lead shielding during imaging procedures, as it does not reduce radiation exposure and can interfere with image quality. The only exception is thyroid shielding, which is still used in our dental clinic.

Why we removed lead shielding:

  • Modern Technology: Advances in imaging technology have significantly reduced radiation exposure.
  • Proven safety: Research shows that shielding does not provide additional protection.
  • Clearer images: Shielding can obscure important anatomy.
  • Faster, more accurate results: Without shields interfering with images, diagnoses can be made more quickly and with greater accuracy.

We are committed to transparency and patient safety. This policy update ensures we continue to provide the best care for children and youth.
