Garbage Tags and Bins

Blue Box Program Changes: As of January 1, 2026, the City no longer sells or exchanges blue boxes. To obtain a replacement blue box, please contact Miller Waste directly at 1-855-752-3762 or area10@millerwaste.ca. Garbage Tags

Richmond Hill's garbage limit is three items each garbage collection day. A garbage item means a bag, garbage can (maximum 125L/33gal), bundle (max. 1.2m/4ft) or a piece of furniture (max. 68kg/150lbs). If you have more than three items you must use garbage tags for extra items to be collected.

Garbage tags are sold in sets of five for $12.75.

How to buy garbage tags

Garbage tags can be purchased in-person at the Operations Centre (1200 Elgin Mills Road East), Main Municipal Offices (225 East Beaver Creek Road), Ed Sackfield Arena (311 Valleymede Drive) and any Richmond Hill Library or Community Centre. All sales are final.

Waste Bins

Residents can purchase waste bins including green bins and kitchen catchers. All sales are final.

How to buy/exchange waste bins

New waste bins are available for in-person purchase at the Operations Centre (1200 Elgin Mills Road East, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm) and at the Main Municipal Offices (225 East Beaver Creek Road, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm). Damaged or broken Richmond Hill labelled green bins (12 gallon only) can be exchanged for free at the Operations Centre only.

2026 Prices and fees

  • Green bins (12 gal, 17.7" x 15.5" x 26.9"): $32.32 (includes HST)
  • Kitchen catchers (12.9" x 8.0" x 9.32"): $12.66 (includes HST)

New Homeowners

If you are a resident in a newly built home bought from a builder (excluding custom built homes) you can get a free set of waste containers by bringing your Tarion certificate (with photo I.D.) to the Operations Centre (1200 Elgin Mills Road East). This includes:

  • One green bin
  • One kitchen catcher
  • One waste management calendar
  • Two blue boxes (only if the developer paid for them)

Bins must be picked up within five years from the date the owner took possession of the home. If more than five years has passed, the homeowner must pay for the bins.

Resale home purchase
Residents that purchase a resale home where the recycling and organics containers are not left behind from the previous owner are responsible for purchasing new bins for collection.
